The much-awaited seventh Bangladesh Cricket Board Directors’ Election will take place today at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in the capital.
The previous BCB elections were held in 1998, 2001, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2017 respectively.
Earlier, Madaripur District councillor Khalid Hossain also withdrew his name from the same subcategory, citing personal reasons.
Manikganj District councillor Naimur Rahman and Narayanganj District councillor Tanvir Ahmed (Titu) are now set to be elected unopposed from Dhaka Division subcategory and both will join the BCB as Board of Directors.
However, Khalid and Ashfaqul’s names will be on the ballot papers as they withdrew their names after September 30 - the last day of nomination withdrawal in the election.
“Your vote is very valuable whether someone is withdrawing,” BCB’s outgoing President Nazmul Hassan Papon said in an event organised by Naimur and Tanvir on Tuesday.
As it stands, now a total of 22 aspiring candidates will fight for 14 Board of Directors’ posts in the election in three different categories.
16 aspiring candidates will fight for 12 posts in category 2 – Dhaka Metro Club Representatives.
The candidates are - Nazmul Hassan, Gazi Golam Murtaza, Najib Ahmed, Mahbubul Anam, Masuduzzaman, Obeid Rashid Nizam, Saiful Islam Bhuiyan, Salahuddin Chowdhury, Ismail Haider Mallick, Enayet Hossain, Fahim Sinha, Iftekhar Rahman, Manzur Kader, Abdur Rahman, Rafiqul Islam and Manzur Alam Manzu.
In category 3, Khaled Mahmud and Nazmul Abedin will be fighting for one post.
“In total, 127 voters will cast their votes. The total number of voters is 171 but the rest are not getting a chance to vote because the seven candidates (officially) have already been elected unopposed. Fifty-six voters are selected to cast vote through e-mail and postal ballots and the rest will come to vote physically,” Election Presiding Officer SM Kabirul Hasan told reporters on Tuesday.
“Unofficially the election results will be revealed tomorrow (today) but officially it will be announced the day after tomorrow (Wednesday),” he said, adding that the directors will elect their next board president on the same day.
Seven candidates - Shafiul Alam Chowdhury from Sylhet, Akram Khan, AJM Nasir Uddin from Chattogram, Sheikh Sohel, Kazi Inam Ahmed from Khulna and Alamgir Khan from Barishal were earlier elected unopposed from their respective categories.
Jalal Yunus and Ahmed Sazzadul Alam are also set to get in the BCB as the National Sports Council nominees who will complete the 25-member Board of Directors of the BCB.
