Syed Shamsul Haq’s 5th death anniversary today

Today is the 5th death anniversary of eminent litterateur Syed Shamsul Haq. To mark the day, different cultural organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes, including discussion, cultural performances and online events.

Literary and cultural organisations will arrange special programmes in Dhaka while Kurigram district administration has also arranged different programmes to mark the day. The programmes include dua mahfil, discussion, cultural shows and placing wreaths at the grave of the writer.

Born in Kurigram on December 27 in 1935, Syed Shamsul Haq was a poet, lyricist and writer of the country. He was awarded Bangla Academy Award in 1966 (the youngest among all to receive it), Ekushey Padak in 1984 and Independence Day Award in 2000 by the Government of Bangladesh for his contributions to Bangali literature.

He had penned several collections of poems including ‘Baishekhe Rachita Panktimala’, ‘Protidhonigon’, ‘Poraner Gohin Vitor’ and others.

Haq was also a very popular novelist. His popular novels are-- ‘Neel Dangshan’, ‘Stabdhatar Anubad’, ‘Brishti o Bidrohigon’, ‘Nishiddho Loban’, ‘Nirbasita’, ‘Khelaram Khele Ja’, and others to his credit.

He also created a new trend in contemporary Bangla drama. He penned popular verse plays such as ‘Payer Awaj Paoa Jay’, ‘Nuruldiner Sara Jiban’, ‘Gononayok’, ‘Irsha’, ‘Narigon’, ‘Banglar Mati Banglar Jal’ and others.

Haq wrote songs including ‘Jar Chaya Poreche Monero Aynate’ and ‘Haire Manush Rongin Fanush’.

Haq was married to Anwara Syed Haq. She is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in London. Together they have one daughter, Bidita Sadiq, and one son, Ditio Syed Haq.

He died of lung cancer on September 27 in 2016 at the age of 81.
