The government has decided to impose a 22-day ban on catching, selling, storing and transporting Hilsa to ensure safe spawning of the national fish during its peak breeding period in the country.
The ban will come into force from October 4 and remain effective till October 25.
During the breeding period of the fish, a massive combined operation will be conducted at all the fisheries ghats, warehouses, and bazaars across the country.

The ban is imposed under the Protection and Conservation of Fish Act 1950.
Any breach of the ban will result in one to two years of imprisonment and a maximum fine of Tk5,000.
