CHATTOGRAM: Jatiya Sangsad Whip and MP from Chattogram-12 (Patiya) constituency Shamsul Haque Chowdhury alias Bichchhu Shamsu and his son Nazmul Karim Chowdhury Sharun have opened a new ‘shop’ of illegal nomination trade.
They are taking lakhs to crores of taka from each of the intended chairman and member candidates in the upcoming union parishad election in Patiya upazila alluring them of managing party nomination and securing their win in the polls.
The grass-roots leaders and activists of the ruling party are frustrated with these misdeeds of the whip and his son.
A former general secretary of Patiya AL said the election is likely to be held in different unions of Patiya in December. “With three months in hands for announcement of the election schedule, the whip and his family members are taking huge money from various probable candidates promising them of nomination,” he said.
They are also taking money from BNP-Jamaat men after assuring them of managing party nomination and securing their win in the chairman and member posts, he said.
The AL leader said the grass-roots leaders and activists are aggrieved with such activities of the whip and his son.
Another leader, preferring anonymity, said if the tested leaders of AL win the UP chairman and member posts, they will not act at the directives of Shamsul and his son.
If the good leaders are in a good position, the power of the father and son will be curbed. For this reason, they are trying to include BNP-Jamaat men in the party to make them chairmen and members, observed the leader.
The whip and his son have started taking a huge amount of money from each of the intended candidates for chairman, member and reserved women seat posts for different unions.
According to insiders, Tk 1 crore to 1.5 crore is being taken from the chairman candidates each for managing the nomination and securing their win in the election.
Besides, Tk 10 lakh to Tk 20 lakh is being taken from the member and women reserved seat candidates each.
In some unions, Shamsul and Sharun are taking money from multiple candidates with the same promise, said the sources.
Besides, though the father and son are mostly busy with chairman posts, their relatives are active to earn money through selling the member and reserved women posts.
Whip's brother Fazlul Haque Chowdhury Mohabbat and Mujibul Haque Chowdhury Nabab, nephew Lokman Khan and other relatives are taking money from the member and reserved women seat candidates, added the sources.
Those who reportedly finalised the deal for the chairmen posts with the whip and his son include Ahmed Kabir Chowdhury and Abul Hasan Khokon in Shovandondi union, Abul Kashem of Kashiash union, BNP leader Abul Bashar in Dhalghat union, Kamal Uddin in Chhanhora union, former BNP leader Shamsul Islam in Kolagaon union, Abul Kalam in Jiri union, Golam Sarwar in Kharna union, Asit Baraua in Jangalkhain union, former BNP leaders Yunus Talukder and Khorshedul Alam in Baralia union and Fauzul Kabir in Habilasadwip union among others.
