Afghan Crisis: Evacuating all Indians top priority: Jaishankar

NEW DELHI: The government of India has said the evacuation of all Indian personnel from Afghanistan is its ‘top priority’ as the situation in Afghanistan has remained critical since the Taliban takeover.

“Our focus is on evacuation and the government is doing everything to evacuate people,” Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said at an all-party meeting on the unfolding Afghan crisis on Thursday.

Following the meet, which was attended by 37 leaders from 31 parties, Jaishankar tweeted that he had briefed the floor leaders of all political parties on the situation in Afghanistan.

“There is longstanding national sentiment on Afghanistan. Therefore, there is national concern now at developments,” Jaishankar said adding “All parties have similar views and we approached the issue with a spirit of national unity.”

Union minister and Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha Piyush Goyal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, NCP leader Sharad Pawar, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Congress party in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, DMK’s TR Baalu, former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, and Apna Dal’s Anupriya Patel also attended the meeting.
