Highest corona deaths recorded in a day

The highest number of deaths from coronavirus has been recorded in the country in the last 24 hours till 8:00am on Thursday.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said 264 corona patients have died and 12,744 infection cases have been detected during the period.

This is the highest number of deaths from Covid-19 since the pandemic started in the country last year.

The DGHS said the highest of 258 deaths was recorded in the country on July 27.

The latest development came as the country extended the ongoing strict lockdown until 10 August to curb the surge of Covid-19.

Earlier, 241 people died from corona and 13,817 cases were reported on Wednesday.

The number of total infections has risen to 1,322,654 with a daily positivity rate of 27.12 percent while the overall infection rate has risen to 16.54 percent.

Besides, the national death toll has jumped to 21,902 with a case fatality rate of 1.66 percent.

The country has seen more than 100 single-day deaths from the virus for 40 consecutive days. This is the 12th day in a row that the country reported over 200 single-day deaths.

Health experts said people’s reluctance to comply with the government’s directives over the ongoing countrywide lockdown is one of the main reasons behind further surge in both deaths and infections from the virus.

The delta variant of coroanvirus which has spread in villages across the country, also another reason behind rising of the infection cases and death in the deadly pathogen, they added.

Already, 1217 coronavirus infected patients died and 73,170 infection cases have been reported in only five days of this month.

A total of 3,36,226 people were infected with the virus and 6,182 corona patients died across the country in July month which is the highest compared to any same period during the pandemic.

The DGHS said coronavirus situation is deteriorating in the capital as the highest corona deaths and infections were registered in Dhaka division in the last 24 hours.

Among the 264 deceased, 140 were men and 124 were women. Of them, one was between 0-10 years old, one was between 11-20 years, five between 21-30 years old, 25 between 31-40, 31 between 41-50, 59 between 51-60, 74 between 61-70, 50 within 71-80, 15 were between 81-90 and three between 91-100 years old.

Of the 264 fresh deaths, 87 were reported in Dhaka division while 56 in Chattogram, 19 in Rajshahi, 35 in Khulna, 10 in Mymensingh, 18 in Rangpur, 23 in Sylhet and 16 in Barishal division.

Of the 12,744 new cases, 5,308 were logged in Dhaka division while 485 in Mymensingh, 3357 in Chattogram, 686 in Rajshahi, 502 in Rangpur, 817 in Khulna, 858 in Barishal and 731 in Sylhet division.

Around 15,786 corona patients have recovered in the last 24 hours, raising the total number of recoveries to 1,156,943. The recovery rate has stood at 87.47 percent.

A total of 46,522 samples, out of 46,995 collected, were tested at 707 labs in the country during the period. With this, 7,995,678 samples have so far been tested across the country.

Locals and hospital sources said the coronavirus situation continued to worsen in several districts across the country, including Dhaka city.

The occupancy of general and ICU beds in Covid-19 units and hospitals across the country has also been increasing day by day while a number of hospitals are now overwhelmed with Covid-19 patients.
