Bangladesh Cricket Board President Nazmul Hassan Papon claimed that their getting the Sheikh Kamal NSC Award 2021 for being the best sports organization is their biggest achievement so far.
“There are so many awards like the Independence Award, Ekushey Padak etc. As it has a connection with sports, I feel that the Sheikh Kamal NSC Award is our biggest achievement,” Nazmul told reporters after receiving the award on Thursday.
The Ministry for Youth and Sports earlier introduced the award to mark the 72nd birth anniversary of freedom fighter Shaheed Captain Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and younger brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
A total of 10 sports personalities and two organizations were felicitated with the award in seven different categories on Thursday where BCB was awarded as the best sports organization.
Bangladesh Under-19 World Cup-winning captain Akbar Ali received the award in the best emerging athlete category along with chess player Mohammad Fahad Rahman and footballer Unnoti Khatun.
Bangladesh Football Federation President Kazi Salahuddin received the lifetime achievement award while Archer Ruman Sana, weightlifter Mabia Akter Simanta and swimmer Mahfuza Khatun Shila were awarded in the best athlete category.
Both Manzur Kader of Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club and Kyaw Shwe Hla of Bangladesh Karate Federation received the best organizer award while Muhammad Kamruzzaman and Walton Group received the best sports journalist and the best sponsor award respectively.
Meanwhile, Nazmul hailed Bangladesh’s new generation cricketers for their fearless brand of cricket which helped them take a 2-0 lead over Australia in the ongoing T20I series.
“I believe after winning the Under-19 World Cup, the confidence of the youngsters received a massive boost. They now play every match to win against all teams. They don’t care and they don’t fear,” he said.
“The youngsters like Shamim, Afif, Naim, Mahedi didn’t even meet these star Australian players in person earlier, let alone playing against them.
“Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa are top-class bowlers so it’s very courageous for them to be strong enough to bat against them for the first time.
“The most pleasing thing for me was, now we play to win and whenever we play, we have the confidence that we can win against any nation. They had that belief before which was absent during the last year but now it’s back,” he concluded.
