Sheikh Kamal’s birth anniv Thursday

The 72nd birth anniversary of Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, will be observed Thursday.

This day in 1949, Sheikh Kamal, younger brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was born at Tungipara in Gopalganj.

To mark the day, Awami League, its associate bodies and different political, socio-cultural and sports organisations will observe the birth anniversary, maintaining health guidelines.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to release a special commemorative postage stamp from her official residence at Ganabhaban in the capital on this occasion.

Posts and telecommunications ministry will organise programmes at 10:30am, marking the birthday of Sheikh Kamal.

Besides, the premier will virtually join a ‘Sheikh Kamal National Sports Council Award-2021’ organised by Jatiya Krira Parishad at Shaheed Sheikh Kamal Auditorium at 11:00am in the capital.

Leaders and activists of Awami League and its associate bodies are expected to pay tribute to Sheikh Kamal by placing wreaths at his portrait on the Dhanmondi Abahani Club premises in the morning.

They will also pay homage by placing wreaths at his grave at Banani graveyard in the capital.

Dhaka city north unit of AL will distribute food items among orphans and destitute people in the capital on the day.

Awami League’s forest and environment affairs subcommittee will organise a virtual discussion at 7:00pm.

Abahani Limited has chalked out various programmes to mark the day.

Abahani Limited and its supporters will pay tribute to Sheikh Kamal by placing wreaths at his portrait on the Dhanmondi Abahani Club premises.

They will visit Kamal’s grave at Banani graveyard and hold a doa-mahfil there, seeking eternal peace of the departed soul of Sheikh Kamal and other family members of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who were assassinated by a group of disgruntled army personnel on August 15, 1975.

Sheikh Kamal, who was first trained on war course in Bangladesh, got commission in liberation force and also became ADC to General Ataul Gani Osmani, commander-in-chief of Bangladesh Armed Forces, during the liberation war.

He was a former executive member of the central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).

Sheikh Kamal was one of the pioneers of modern football in Bangladesh and also founder-president of Abahani Krira Chakra.

He was martyred on August 15 in 1975 at the age of 26 while he was a Master’s Degree (final year) examinee.

He used to play cricket in the first division for Azad Boys Club and Basketball too in the first division for Spurs Club.

Sheikh Kamal was also a founder-member of Dhaka Theatre and Spondon Shilpa Gousthi, a musical band of folksongs.
