Rangpur division records 21 Covid deaths in a day

A record number of 21 patients died of Covid-19 during the last 24 hours ending at 8 am on Sunday in Rangpur division where the daily positivity rate continues rising amid declining recovery rate in recent weeks.   

“The number of casualties rapidly climbed to 653 in the division this morning amid a rising casualty rate in recent weeks,” Focal Person of the Covid-19 and Assistant Director (Health) for Rangpur division Dr ZA Siddiqui said.

The 21 new casualties include six from Rangpur, five from Dinajpur and three from Gaibandha, two each from Kurigram and Thakurgaon and one each from Panchagarh, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat districts in the division.   

“A record number of 226 Covid-19 patients, the highest number in a month from June 10 to July 10 last, died in all eight districts of Rangpur division,” he said.   

The district-wise break up of the 653 fatalities stands at 129 in Rangpur, 223 in Dinajpur, 117 in Thakurgaon, 45 in Nilphamari, 34 in Kurigram, 30 in Panchagarh, 32 in Gaibandha and 43 in Lalmonirhat districts of the division, reports BSS.

“The average casualty rate currently stands at two percent in the division,” Dr Siddiqui said. 

Meanwhile, the number of Covid-19 cases hastily reached 32,716 as 748 more patients were reported after testing 2,147 samples at 34.84 percent positivity rate on Saturday in the division further deteriorating the overall Covid-19 situation.

Earlier, the daily positivity rates were 32.14 percent on Friday, 31.39 percent on Thursday, 28.41 percent on Wednesday, 41.80 percent on Tuesday, 34.79 percent on Monday and 34.23 percent on Sunday last in the division.

“The district-wise break up of total 32,716 patients now stands at 7,203 Rangpur, 1,545 Panchagarh, 2,383 in Nilphamari, 1,830 in Lalmonirhat, 2,272 in Kurigram, 4,579 in Thakurgaon, 10,248 in Dinajpur and 2,656 in Gaibandha of the division,” he said.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 1,75,001 collected samples of the division were tested till Saturday, and of them, 32,716 were found Covid-19 positive with an average positivity rate of 18.69 percent.                   

Acting Divisional Director (Health) Dr Abu Md Zakirul Islam said the number of healed Covid-19 patients reached 23,568 with recovery of 428 patients on Saturday in the division at the average recovery rate of 72.04 percent.       

“The average recovery rate of Covid-19 infected patients was 97.55 percent around four months ago on March 9 last in the division where the same harshly dropped by 25.51 percent during the period to 72.04 percent on Saturday,” Dr Islam said.  

Among the 32,716 infected patients, 672 are undergoing treatments at isolation units, including 26 critical patients at ICU beds and 11 at High Dependency Unit beds, after recovery of 23,568 patients and 653 deaths while 8,324 are remaining in home isolation.

Dr Islam suggested people to strictly abide by the health directives and assist the authorities concerned to make the current lockdown a complete success aiming at containing the community transmission of Covid-19 virus to remain safe.

Talking to BSS, Chief of Divisional Coronavirus Service and Prevention Task Force and Principal of Rangpur Medical College Professor Dr AKM Nurunnobi Lyzu expressed deep concern over the rapidly deteriorating Covid-19 situation in Rangpur division. 

He called upon all to strictly abide by the health directives, hygiene rules and remain at homes during the current lockdown to remain safe and contain the rising Covid-19 positivity rate in the division.
