RU quadragenarian Prof Shamiul Alam passes away

Shamiul Alam, a Professor of Department of Agronomy and Agricultural Extension at Rajshahi University, breathed his last at a private clinic in the city in the early hours of today.

He was only 46, said a RU press release.

Shamiul had been suffering from acute septic ulcer in intestine for long.

He left behind his mother, wife, only 14-year-old daughter and a large number of students, academic colleagues and host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death.

During his academic career of the department from 2004 to 2021, Prof Shamiul Alam supervised more than 20 post-graduation thesis papers.

He was laid to eternal rest at RU graveyard after a namaz-e-janaza held at RU central Jam-e Mosque.

Born in Sonargaon village in Dhunat Upazila of Bogura district in 1975, Shamiul Alam obtained B.Sc (Honours) in Agriculture and M.Sc in Genetics and Plant Breeding from Bangladesh Agriculture University in 1996 and 1998 respectively and got PhD degree from Rajshahi University in 2011.

Meanwhile, RU VC in-Charge Prof Ananda Kumar Shaha and Pro-VC Prof Chowdhury Jakaria expressed their deep shock at the death of Prof Shamiul Alam.

They also prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the members of the bereaved family.
