Newly-appointed Army Chief General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed on Thursday took the charge of Bangladesh Army for the next three years. Outgoing Army Chief General Aziz Ahmed handed over the charge to General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed at the Army Headquarters at a simple ceremony.

Profile of SM Shafiuddin

General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed was born on December 1, 1963 into an aristocratic Muslim family in Khulna district. His father, late Sheikh Mohammad Rokon Uddin Ahmed, was a freedom fighter, professor, social worker and politician.

Until his death in 1980, he was closely involved in various public welfare activities for the welfare of the people of Khulna for two long decades as an elected public representative.

After his death, the people of Khulna named ‘Professor Rokon Uddin Sarak’ after him as a tribute.

General Shafiuddin Ahmed was commissioned on 23 December 1983 from Bangladesh Military Academy with 9th long term course.

After the commission, he started his military career by joining the East Bengal Regiment in the operation area in Chattogram Hill Tracts. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the Defense Services Command and Staff College as well as a Masters in Defense Studies from the National University and an MPhil with outstanding results from Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) in Development and Security Studies department.

He is currently studying for a PhD under BUP. General Shafiuddin Ahmed received an MBA degree from Dhaka University and MIST Gold Medal. He successfully completed the Defense and Strategic Studies course from the National Defense University (NDU) of China in 2010 and the Army Staff course from the Defense Services Command and Staff College in Mirpur.

He also participated in the Executive Seminar Course conducted by the North East South Asia (NESA) Center at the National Defense University in the United States in 2009 and was honored as a graduate of NESA. In his colorful career, he served as General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Army Training and Doctrine Command. He commanded the only logistics formation and 19th Infantry Division of the Bangladesh Army.

Shafiuddin was also the Brigade Commander of an Infantry Brigade, Battalion Commander of the Bangladesh Military Academy and Commander of an Infantry Battalion in the Counter Insurgency Operations Area in the Chattogram Hill Tracts.

He also served as the Director General of Bangladesh Institute of International Studies (BIIS). General Shafiuddin, as a Pioneer Deputy Force Commander of the Bangladesh Army, led the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) from 2014 to 2016 and received citations by SRSG for outstanding performance.

He also successfully served in peacekeeping missions in Mozambique from 1993-1994. He served in the National Defense College as Senior Directing Staff, Senior Operating and Administrative Staff Officer in various Formation Headquarters, Cadet College as Instructor and Bangladesh Military Academy as Platoon Commander.

He served with great success as the Chief of Doctrine Division of the Army Training and Doctrine Command (ARTDOC) and as the Director of the Directorate of Military Training at the Army Headquarters.

Prior to taking over as Chief of Army Staff, he served as Quartermaster General in the Army Headquarters. In private life, General Shafiuddin Ahmed and Begum Noorjahan Ahmed are the proud parents of two daughters.
