Int’l Day of UN Peacekeepers observed

The International Day of UN Peacekeepers has been observed in Bangladesh as elsewhere in the world on Saturday.

The outstanding contribution of peacekeepers from all countries of the world participating in UN peacekeeping operations is commemorated with deep respect on the day.

To mark the occasion, various events were organised commemorating all brave men and women who have contributed towards establishing peace and security in the war-torn countries and ravaged societies across the world.

On the occasion, President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Foreign Minister, Chiefs of the three Forces, Principal Staff Officer (PSO) of the Armed Forces Division (AFD), Inspector General of Police (IGP), UN Secretary General and UN Resident Coordinator of Bangladesh gave separate messages.

As part of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers program, a reception was given to the relatives of martyred and injured Bangladeshi peacekeepers at Senakunja at 11:00am.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was present as the chief guest at the reception through video teleconferencing (VTC).

A minute of silence was observed for the martyrs during the peacekeeping operation after the reception started with the recitation of the Holy Quran at Senakunja.

A special presentation on UN peacekeeping operations was organized at the event.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen addressed the function. Besides, Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed addressed the gathering as the most senior peacekeeper. UN Resident Coordinator Mia Seppo welcomed the gathering.

Prime Minister also exchanged views with members of the Armed Forces and Police engaged in peacekeeping operations in various countries through VTC. The program was broadcast live on Bangladesh Television and BTV World.

Members of the Cabinet, Chief of the Army Staff, Acting Chief of the Naval Staff and Chief of the Air Staff, Principal Staff Officer (PSO) of the Armed Forces Division, Inspector General of Police, Senior Secretaries / Secretaries of various Ministries, senior officials of various UN agencies in Bangladesh and senior military and civilian dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Earlier, the day long programme began in the morning with ‘Peacekeepers Day Run-2021’ arranged by Bangladesh Air Force Base Bashar, Dhaka and Air Force Base Zahurul Haque, Chattogram.

Foreign Minister Dr A K Abdul Momen, inaugurated the event by releasing pigeons, balloons and festoons in Dhaka.

On the other hand, Major General Md Saiful Abedin, GOC of 24 Infantry Division, Chattogram inaugurated the event in Chattogram as the Chief Guest.

On the occasion, the Chief Guests and representative of local UN organization delivered speeches highlighting significance of Bangladesh Peacekeeping Forces in UN peacekeeping mission.

Representatives from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Armed Forces, Bangladesh Police, UN agencies and Inter Service Organization, Dignitaries and media personnel took part in the events.

On the occasion of the day, special documentaries on Peacekeepers Run, discussion meetings and various activities of Bangladeshi peacekeepers were screened in Sylhet and Rangpur Cantonments. The event was attended by officers of all ranks, JCOs and civilians of other ranks.

In observance of the day, different mainstream national dailies have been published special supplements and journals highlighting the importance of the day.

Documentaries on Bangladesh’s peacekeeping activities were aired on Bangladesh Television and other private channels.

Besides, different private television channels including Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar also aired special talk-shows on the occasion.
