Former Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Shahjahan Chowdhury has been arrested in connection with the Hefazat riots in Hathazari of Chattogram over the arrival of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March.
The Jamaat leader was held from his residence at Samdarpara of Satkania municipality on early Saturday over the Hefajat-e-islam mayhem that took place at Hathazari on March 26 and 27, Chattogram District Superintendent of Police S M Rashidul Haque said.He will be shown arrested in a violence case filed with Hathazari Police Station, he added.
Shajahan is a former chief of the Chattogram Metropolitan branch of Jamaat and a member of the group’s Central Majlish-e-Shura. He was elected a member of parliament from the Satkania-Lohagara seat during the BNP-Jamaat alliance government.
The Jamaat leader has been accused in nearly 20 cases related to violence at different times. He was previously arrested in 2018 for ‘instigation’ during the student road protest movement.
