Juboraj-led gang active in capital

A terror gang allegedly led by one Juboraj has long been committing various crimes, including extortion and drug trade, in the capital's Cantonment, Vasantek and Pallabi, creating panic among residents in the areas.

Locals said the gang is carrying out criminal activities in the areas, but law enforcers could not arrest its members, including Juboraj.

The police officers concerned admitted the fact to the Daily Sun and said they are trying to arrest him and his associates.

The criminal activities of Juboraj came to the fore after some members of his gang opened fire on a construction contractor, Arab Ali, at West Matikata in Cantonment area on March 30 this year.

Kazi Shahan Haque, officer-in-charge (OC) of Cantonment Police Station, told the Daily Sun that the gang led by Juboraj is committing extortion and other crimes in Cantonment area after coming from Vasantek area.

“He is mainly a resident of Vasantek slum. Sometimes, he lives in Kalshi slum,” he said.

“We and DB police are trying to arrest him,” he said.

When contacted, Delwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Vasantek Police Station, told the Daily Sun that Juboraj is a cohort of killer Ibrahim, who is now living in Malaysia.

“As per directive of Ibrahim, Juboraj is committing crimes. He mainly commits crimes in Cantonment area. He does not enter our area. We are searching for him,” he said.

Police sources said some locally influential persons are backing Juboraj.

A CCTV camera caught a scene that shows the gang. Its members numbering around 10 were parading a road at West Matikata at noon on March 30. Two of them were carrying firearms openly.

Arab Ali, who sustained bullet injury, said that some members of the gang came to him and asked whether he was Arab Ali.

“When I replied in the affirmative, they fired three bullets at me, but all missed the target. After that, one of them set his pistol to my chest. At that time, I jumped and grasped the firearm.  Then, a bullet hit at one of my thighs,” he said.

They also injured his employee Rafiqul Islam, he added.

He said Juboraj, whom he did not see, demanded extortion from him as he was constructing a drain line.

“But I did not agree to pay the extortion money. That is why Juboraj through his cohorts attacked us,” he said.

Arab Ali, hailing from Rajshahi, said the associates of Juboraj injured another employee of him by slightly cutting his body with a sharp weapon.

A man wishing not to be named said that the cohorts of Juboraj tortured him as he refused to supply drugs.

Sources said teen boys are forced to do drug trade. If they refuse to do such act, the gang tortures them.

Mashiur Rahman, deputy commissioner (Gulshan DB Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told the Daily Sun that they were investigating the matter.

“We are trying to arrest Juboraj and other members. After arrest, it can be known about the leader of the gang whether it is Juboraj or anybody from behind,” he said.
