Govt arrests miscreants, not Alems: Hasan

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud  said the law enforcement agencies are arresting only miscreants, not any Alem or religious leader.

“The law enforcers are arresting those who gave directives and the miscreants who carried out mayhems across the country on March 26 and 28, burned houses and properties of innocent people, set fire to land office and burned documents of commoners and carried out attacks on rail stations and the masses,” he said.

The minister said this while replying to a query of newsmen over a comment of BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, at his official residence at Mintu Road in the capital.

Earlier, Hasan, also Awami League joint general secretary, inaugurated an online workshop titled ‘The Role of Local Journalists in Implementing Digital Bangladesh’ organised by Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) and A2I project of the government.

BSS Managing Director and Chief Editor Abul Kalam Azad presided over the meeting.

The minister said some people with the camouflage of Alem (Islamic scholar) are involved with criminal activities and the government is arresting them. No Alem or Islamic leader was involved in the sabotage, he added.

About BNP’s politics, he said the party (BNP) always does politics with religion and evil forces. BNP does politics with those who don’t believe in the country’s independence-sovereignty and want to make the country Afghanistan, he added.

Hasan said the Hefazt leaders could bring out processions if any one mocked the Prophet like what Mamunul Haque did. And Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also could echo their (Hefazt’s) voice in that case, he added.

About a meeting between the home minister and Hefazat leaders, the minister said if anyone wants to meet with the concerned persons of the government, then they can meet. “The home minister also met with them. But, there will be no deviation in taking actions against the culprits,” he added.

Earlier, in the workshop, Hasan put emphasis on providing laptops to all the district correspondents.

Information and Communication Technology Division Senior Secretary NM Ziaul Alam and A2I Project Director Dr Abdul Mannan addressed the inaugural function as special guests through online.
