The Probashi Kalyan Bank (PKB) has disbursed over Tk 1.4 billion so far from the Tk 7 billion special reintegration loan for migrant workers who returned to the country amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Imran Ahmad said this while addressing the inaugural function of a two-day international conference on the reintegration of returnee migrants as the chief guest on Monday.
But, the disbursement process got pace in the new year as loans of around Tk 1.3 billion were disbursed between January and March this year, the minister said.
He expected that loan disbursement will cross over Tk 2 billion by June this year.
Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU), in collaboration with Migrant Forum in Asia and British Council’s project “Prokas” organised the conference on “Reintegration of Returnee Migrants affected by the Covid-19 Pandemic”.
Imran Ahmad said about 4.28 lakh migrant workers have returned home in the last year amid coronavirus pandemic.
He said the government has taken numbers of initiatives for the returnees’ reintegration, including special loans and providing them with recognition of prior learning (RPL) certificates.
Till March this fiscal year, the country has received about $18.4 billion as inward remittance, he added.
Imran Ahmed said the amount has already crossed the $18.2 billion that the country received as remittance in the last fiscal year.
