Launch capsize: 20 people rescued alive, bodies of five women recovered

Twenty people have been rescued alive while bodies of five women recovered as a launch capsized in the Shitalakkhya river in Narayanganj.

Members of Navy, Coast Guard and Fire Service and Civil Defence rescued the passengers apart from recovering bodies of five women after Munshiganj-bound launch with 50 passengers had an accident Sunday evening.

Talking to the press, Nahida Barek, upazila nirbahi officer of Narayanganj, confirmed recovery of five bodies.

The launch named Sabit Al Hasan left Narayanganj terminal for Munshiganj loaded with about 50 passengers around 5:56pm and it sank near the third Shitalakkhya Bridge at Koylaghat of Syedpur area after being hit by a "coaster tanker."

A four-member committee has been formed to probe into the accident.
