The government has imposed a weeklong lockdown to stem the surge in coronavirus cases in the country.

The Cabinet Division issued a notification on Sunday detailing what can be done and what cannot be.

The people have been barred from going outside from 6pm to 6am without any emergency while public transport has been suspended in an effort to prevent the further spread of the virus.

What can be done

Vehicles being used by law enforcement agencies, emergency relief workers, health services, utility services, fire service, land and maritime ports, telephone and internet providers will be allowed to run.

All government, semi-government and autonomous offices can use own transport to carry a limited number of employees to working stations only to perform emergency duties.

Production at factories and construction work will continue with the own transportation facilities of the organisations.

Trade bodies like BGMEA and BKMEA will set up field hospitals and ensure medical treatment for their workers in nearby suitable places.

To keep the daily life of people normal, kitchen markets and superstores can remain open from 8am to 4pm.

Restaurants and food shops can supply only takeaway foods.

E-commerce sites will be allowed to operate. The staff must follow the health protocols in running online trading and no customer should appear at the shop physically.

“We’re yet to get any directive from the ministry to keep services on for long distance. From E-Cab, we asked all market players to operate in nearby areas maintaining hygiene rules,” Abdul Wahed Tomal, general secretary at Ecommerce Association of Bangladesh, told the Daily Sun.

Inbound and outbound passengers are allowed to move to and from airports.

What can’t done

The operation of public transport -- buses, trains and launches -- as well as planes will remain suspended during the period.

Markets, shopping malls, hotels and restaurants will also remain shut.

No customer can dine at restaurants in person.
