(A personal profile of Engineer Golam Murshed, a Bangladeshi native mechanical engineer, business leader and entrepreneur. He is currently serving as the Managing Director of Walton Hi-Tech Industries Limited.)
Engineer Golam Murshed with his expertise areas - company management, business plans, strategic oversight, corporate governance, sales development, public relationship, cost management and project management - had been a major part of shaping Walton into an unbeatable force in the local and international business market. His success at Walton as a fresh graduate has now led him at the peak of the company. This business executive and engineer has been serving as the managing director of Walton Hi-Tech Industries Limited, the leading electronics products manufacturer in Bangladesh.
Engrossingly with the nature to try new things and take on new challenges, he is leading the electronic giant during a time of changes everywhere, during the time of life-killing corona pandemic, witnessing major changes in the global business. It seems that Engineer Golam Murshed is tickling with the challenges and the unknowns around him.
Early life and education
Murshed was born in a prominent family in Chapainawabganj, the north-western district of Bangladesh and a part of the Rajshahi Division. He passed SSC from Harimohan Govt. High School in 2004. He was graduated from Islamic University of Technology (IUT) with a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering after completion of HSC from Notre Dame College in Dhaka.
Early hours of career
A fresh graduate, Golam Murshed, joined Walton Hi-Tech Industries Limited on December 20, 2010 holding the position as an assistant engineer after completion of his graduation from IUT on December 3 of the same year. He changed the joining department- research and development- soon and started screening his charismatic leadership with the production unit as its in-charge. That was the fortuitous for Murshed to be an innovative leader.‘May be the authorities found the quality of leading the production team in me. The very first piece of product of Walton AC came in my hand. It is memorable for me,’ the engineer expressed with happily gestures.
Climbing the leadership ladder
After working in AC production for over two years, I went into the refrigerator production with the approval of the authorities, because the fridge production procedures seemed dynamic to me then. I was not shilly-shallied to take the charge of the most important and complex line of fridge production, he said, adding “I think there were more challenges here. The challenges, however, were immense. I was fortunate that the authorities gave me that opportunity to accept.”
“The production was almost doubled in a year after I took charge of that production line in the refrigerator manufacturing plant. Of course, everyone in the team contributed. This was made possible because my colleagues were willing to follow my instructions. In fact, a leading or managing of people is one of the most difficult tasks in the world.”
The young engineer echoed: The then managing director of Walton Hi-Tech Industries Limited gave me the responsibility of business operations while working with the fridge production line. The revolutionary changes were made in my career three years later; when I was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the refrigerator department.
The trail of becoming AMD and MD of WHIL
Golam Murshed, who always dreams to transform Bangladesh technologically and empower the people with cutting edge technology, was appointed as the managing director of the leading electronics products manufacturer on October 8, 2020. Prior to this appointment, he had also been promoted as the company’s additional managing director (AMD).
“I think the former MD had faith and trust in me. He wanted me to get involved in larger scale. Becoming CEO of the refrigerator department was my turning point in course to be AMD and MD. As an associate of the then MD, I’ve experienced in all fields from R&D to production, planning, finance, marketing, management that led my jobs getting easier.”
“Comfort zones are not really good for career development. The comfort zone is good for those who do not want variation in their careers. It's not bad to be in the comfort zone. But that is not the way to go. “I would say I have given much time, I have given hard labor. I had a dedication to the Walton brand as a whole. That was my contribution. May be the reason why the authorities picked me to lead in the horn.”
The leader’s goal and dream
“We are marching forward aim to reach Walton as one of the top global electronic brand by 2030. Achieving that goal is now my main concern with Walton.”
I’ve another vision: My dream has always been to do something for the students and the young generation. I’m explaining to them that always reading a book is not everything. Being bookish is not always enough for an advanced future career. Young generation should be able to realize that there is a life beyond this. So I would tell the students to get an idea or taste about their future career before they finish education.
“I personally want everyone to stay in the country after graduation. I am discouraging students from going abroad. Why do I have to go abroad and do PhD? Opportunities have to be created in the country to be able to complete PhD in any company or factory. So this is my long cherished dream.”
“In a bid to stop the brain drain, my relentless efforts are underway to create an environment to complete PhDs in the workplace very soon. If the person assigned gets some output or adds something extra to the brand value after working in the workplace for three years, then I will try to give them the status of PhD. I’m going to start this process with Walton,” he explains.
Golam Murshed’s father Monirul Islam has been serving as a key member of the Chapainawabganj Press Club. Golam Murshed has tied the knot with one of the female directors of Walton Group.
“I like to read books and watch movies. I also play table tennis and other games to keep my body fit. I personally don’t like to follow certain people in life. I have shaped a style of my own. I like to go that way. I don’t believe that you have to give up your identity to follow someone. Any of my work, any of my word can actually come in handy. But I’m not telling anyone to follow me as well. Do your own job, and you will be succeeded.”
