A man was arrested after he attempted to rob ornaments from a jewellery shop in Baitul Mukarram Mosque Market of the capital on Saturday night, brandishing a bomb-like object

The arrestee was identified as Saiful Islam, 28, a resident of Naria Upazila in Shariatpur district.

Shop attendants said that the man put two bangles in his bag after inquiring about some of the ornaments at 8:30pm.

As the shop owner asked for money, Saiful showed a bomb-like object and tried to flee, threatening to explode it.

Street vendors later caught him and handed him over to police.

Abu Bakar Siddique, officer-in-charge of Paltan Police Station, said Bomb disposal unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police later went to the spot and discarded the object after making sure it was not a bomb.
