Zainul Haque Sikder, chairman of Sikder Group of Companies, was laid to eternal rest Sunday afternoon.

He was buried at the campus of ZH Sikder Women’s Medical College at Rayer Bazar in the capital Dhaka after Asr prayers.

Thousands of people poured into the place to join the Namaj-e-Janaza (funeral prayer) for Zainul Haque Sikder, a valiant freedom fighter, leading industrialist and philanthropist.

Before the burial, the body of Zainul Haque Sikder was taken to his village home at Bhedarganj Upazila in Shariatpur district Sunday morning. His second Namaj-e-Janaza was held with the participation of thousands of people there.

The body of ZH Sikder, who breathed his last on February 10 in a Dubai hospital at the age of 91, was brought home Friday afternoon.

A chartered flight carrying his mortal remains landed in Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 5:15pm, said family sources.

The body of the valiant freedom fighter and renowned social worker was taken to Gulshan branch of ZH Sikder Women’s Medical College and Hospital from the airport.

 Later, the body was taken to his Dhanmondi residence.

His first namaj-e-janaza was held at ZH Sikder Medical College at Rayer Bazar.

Before the burial, he was given a guard of honour.

A leading industrialist of the country, Sikder was born in Assam of undivided India on August 12, 1930. He migrated to present-day Bangladesh with his family during the partition in 1947.

He was one of those who contributed greatly to the socioeconomic development of Bangladesh. He established a large number of educational, medical, housing and touristic ventures and employed about 20,000 people in the last seven decades.

Apart from establishing business entities, ZH Sikder developed numerous entrepreneurs. He extended a helping hand to many leading entrepreneurs of the country during their initial days of establishing businesses.

He was well-known as a philanthropist, too. Besides founding schools, colleges and hospitals, he extended support to poverty reduction and welfare of the underprivileged and marginal class of people.

Zainul Haque Sikder had been with Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as one of his close and trustworthy associates since 1945.
