3 new symptoms could be early indicators of COVID-19: Study

With the onset of the pandemic, people have been tackling the different challenges brought on by the novel coronavirus. The invisible yet deadly virus has not only been hard to detect, but has disrupted the lives of millions of people in various ways.

COVID-19 could affect you in a lot of ways

That said, the wide range of symptoms, which can go from mild to severe medical complications, continue to increase and expand in numbers. As per a recent report, three new symptoms could be early indicators of COVID-19.

New signs of COVID-19

According to a study conducted at Spain’s Hospital Universitario La Paz in Madrid, warning signs of COVID-19 can be detected on the tongue, hands and feet of the patient. The research carried out among 666 patients infected with the virus at Madrid's IFEMA field hospital found that one in four patients complained of swollen tongue, burning sensations on their palms and redness on the soles of the feet.

Swollen tongue

COVID patients evaluated under the study reported serious infection inside the mouth, leading to the formation of white patches and inflammation. This rare condition has been called "COVID tongue" by many scientists and medical professionals and has been associated with loss of sense of taste - another common symptom of COVID-19.

Burning sensation and redness on the palms and soles of the feet

Apart from the swollen tongue, about 15 per cent of the patients complained of experiencing a burning sensation and redness on their palms and soles of their feet, followed by the appearance of small patches on the same areas.

As per Dr Almudena Nuno‐Gonzalez, the lead researcher of the study, said in an interview, “Almost half of the patients with mild‐to‐moderate Covid‐19 admitted in a field‐hospital during a two‐week period showed mucocutaneous findings."

Besides that, Nuno-Gonzalez added by saying that oral cavity was also a cause of concern in many patients and needed special examination from time to time.

Other symptoms of COVID-19

While new symptoms arise from time to time, pre-existing common symptoms of COVID-19 should not be ignored. Some of the most classic signs of COVID-19 are as follows.

- Fever

- Dry cough

- Sore throat

- Runny and stuffy nose

- Chest pain and shortness of breath

- Fatigue
