5 held over killing man near High Court in city

Detective Branch of police arrested five alleged muggers in a case filed over killing of a cable operator businessman near High Court in Dhaka on Saturday night.

The arrestees are identified as Md Sohel, Jahid Hossain, Sukkur Ali, Md Shakil and Sohel Mia.

On secret information, a team of detectives (Ramna Division) carried out a raid and arrested them from Mugda and Kamrangirchar area.

AKM Hafiz Akhter, additional commissioner (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, disclosed the information at a press briefing at DMP media centre in the capital today.

Earlier on Saturday night, Hamidul Islam, also general secretary of Shahbagh Thana unit of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, was stabbed dead near High Court area while he was returning to his Segunbagicha residence.

A case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station in this regard.

The law enforcers recovered a knife, victim's mobile phone and a wallet from arrestees' possession, Detectives sources said.

During preliminary interrogation, the arrestees admitted that they took position opposite the High Court's Mazar gate on that evening. Around 8:30pm, they intercepted Hamidul and seized his two mobile phone sets and wallet. They stabbed him as he screamed for help, detective officials claimed.
