22 fishermen jailed for violating ban in Sirajganj

A mobile court has arrested 22 fishermen from Sunday evening to Monday morning for violating government ban on Hilsha fishing at different points of Jamuna River in Belkuchi upazila of Sirajganj.

The ongoing mobile court led by Sirajganj Belkuchi Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Anisur Rahman sentenced each fisherman to 12-day imprisonment.

The jailed persons were sent to Sirajganj district jail on Monday morning.

They are identified as Chan Mia, 40, hailing from Thakurpara village in Belkuchi upazila,  Abbas (32) of Char village in Belkuchi, Nure Alam (26), Shakil (19) of Belkuchi village, Khairul (30) of Char Bell village, Kabirul (30), Rafiqul (40), Soleman (19), Alamgir (28), Yusuf (38) of Mulkandi village, Sona Mia (35), Mannan (30), Dulal (43), Mojibar (41) of Chandpur village of Chowhali upazila. Faridul (31), Faraz Ali (52), Samiul (19), Khorshed (32), Naim (20) of Barbala village, Rabiul (28) of Boalkandi village, Hashem (35) and Qaiyum (19) of Chaluhara village.

Mobile court bench clerk Hafiz Uddin said during the drive 22 fishermen were arrested and 50,000 meters of current net were seized.

Later, the fishes were distributed in the local orphanage and the current net were destroyed by fire, Hafiz added.
