World Animal Day 2020: Date, history, and significance

World Animal Day 2020: All animals play a key role in environmental protection and human wellness. Some animals help us to bring out the nutrients from the cycle, while some animals help in decomposition, carbon, and nitrogen cycle. All animals and plants in the ecosystem co-exist and balance each other without taking the ecological balance off. Thus, to raise awareness about improving the welfare standards of the animals across the globe World Animal Day is celebrated annually.

"As custodians of the planet, it is our responsibility to deal with all species with kindness, love and compassion. That these animals suffer through human cruelty is beyond understanding. Please help to stop this madness." - Richard Gere

World Animal Welfare Day is observed on October 4th across the world every year. The international day is very significant in terms of caring, protecting, and spreading awareness through the support and involvement of individuals, groups and organisations that care for and love animals. This is the reason it is also known as "Animal Lovers Day".

World Animal Day 2020: History

This international day of action (World Animal Day) is also the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. Heinrich Zimmermann organized the first celebration in 1925 in Berlin, Germany. He launched the event to raise awareness and improve the welfare of animals. More than 5000 people showed up and showed their support in the first event.

"Killing animals for sport, for pleasure, for adventure, and for hides and furs is a phenomenon which is at once disgusting and distressing. There is no justification in indulging in such acts of brutality." -- Dalai Lama

In the year 2003, Naturewatch Foundation, a UK-based animal welfare charity launched the first World Animal Day website. The website powers small but effective ways of raising awareness, general knowledge of does, and don'ts against nature. This year also, the website suggests that there are events and conferences on the importance of the day.
