A suspected criminal was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Sadar upazila of Pabna early Wednesday.

Police said Md Tanjib, 30, son of Babu Sheikh, from Ramchandrapur village of the upazila, was accused in five criminal cases lodged in different police stations of the district.

The gunfight took place at Battala Mor of Charshibrampur embankment of Sadar police station around 3:15 am.

Tipped off, a team of law enforcers conducted a drive in the area this morning, said Rafiqul Islam, superintendent of police in Pabna.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the criminals opened fire on law enforcers, forcing them to take action in self defence, he said.

At one stage, Tanjib was shot and his cohorts managed to flee the scene.

He was later taken to Pabna Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead at 4:00 am, the police officer said.
