No layoffs at RMG sector in any cause, says Manna

Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna on Friday criticised the BGMEA president for her statement on laying off RMG workers.

He said that the owners of garments factory are not extending their helping hand to the workers hit hard by the coronavirus fallout, saying they have become pauper by siphoning money abroad.

In a statement provided to media today, he also said that there should be no layoffs at readymade garment (RMG) factories during this hard days of corona crisis.

Earlier on Thursday, BGMEA President Rubana Huq said a good number of garment workers might be terminated from their jobs this month as the factories are running at 55 percent capacity at present, owing to the fallout from Covid-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, the leaders of Bangladesh Confederation of Labour (BCL) today (Friday) protested the move and demanded social safety, ration, residential and health service facilities, including industrial area-based hospitals for ready-made garment workers.
