Deer rescued in Bagerhat

A deer, rescued from sonatala village in Sharankhola upazila of Bagerhat, was released in the Sundarbans on Thursday.

Joynul Abedin, assistant forest conservator of Sharankhola range, said local people caught the deer from the village in the afternoon.

It was a barking deer, a species native to South and Southeast Asia, he said.

It is believed that, the deer aged about five to six years, came to the locality from the Sundarbans through the Bhola river banks.

On information, a forest department team went to the spot and rescued the deer. Later, they released it in Bhola forest camp of the Sundarbans.

Earlier on April 23 and 24, two deer were rescued from Mathbaria upazila of Pirojpur district and those were also released in the Sundarbans.

On May 4, the forest department in a drive rescued 22 deer and arrested three deer poachers from the Sundarbans.

They also recovered 30 kgs of venison, three boats and deer traps from their possession.
