Manna urges rich to do more for poor

Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna on Thursday criticised the rich section of people for not extending their helping hand to the people hit hard by the coronavirus fallout, saying they have become pauper by siphoning money aboard.

Speaking at a discussion, he also warned that the country may witness a famine if the government fails to tackle the corona crisis.

“Bill Gates alone provided $44 billion while China's Jack Ma $40 billion, India's Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan over 200 crore financial assistance to tackle the corona,” Mannna said.

He further said, “But the rich people in our country cannot come up with financial assistance as it seems they have become paupers since lakhs of crore taka has been siphoned off abroad from our country.”

Bangladesh Civil Rights Society arranged the programme titled ‘The Challenges of the workers, at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU).

Manna said the RMG workers are not getting wages while the lower-middle class is again going to plunge into poverty again.

“There’re around four crore families who depends on their daily earnings. If the corona situation continues for a long time, many people will die and a famine will hit the country if you (PM) can’t take proper steps,” he warned.

Manna urged different professional bodies to come forward and stand by the needy people to ease their sufferings.

Quoting a media report, he said the 13 members of a rich district-level Awami League leader received the OMS rice as no action is being taken against the relief irregularities.

The Ngorik Oikya leader urged the government to form a technical committee to overcome the current crisis.
