Govt working to arrange 15,000 beds for patients

The government is working to arrange around 15,000 beds in public and private hospitals across the country for coronavirus patients as the number of infection cases is increasing gradually.

“The health and family welfare ministry is now working to increase the number of beds in hospitals for coronavirus patients. We’re working to ensure 10,000-15,000 beds instantly. The number will be increased gradually if necessary,” Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General (Administration) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), told the daily sun.

Addressing a health bulletin of the DGHS, Nasima Sultana said on Thursday that the government has already prepared a total of 6,977 isolation beds in different hospitals across the country -- 1550 in Dhaka and 5,427 outside the capital.

She also said now 192 ICU (Intensive Care Unit) beds are prepared and 40 dialysis facility for Covid-19 patients in different hospitals.

The DGHS official further said 14,897 physicians have taken training about Covid-19 online while 3,853 of them are voluntarily giving treatment services through the DGHS hotlines every day.

Nasima said the government has collected 14,46616 personal protective equipment (PPE) for physicians, nurses and other health staff involved in coronavirus treatment services and distributed 50,464 PPE and 396,153 more PPE remained in stock.

About the update of coronavirus situation in Bangladesh, she said 2019 samples have been tested to detect coronavirus while 341 new corona patients have been detected and 10 more patients died in the country in the past 24 hours.

The ADG of the DGHS further said 1,572 Covid-19 patients have been detected and 60 of them died in the country so far.

Prof Dr Abul Kalam Azad, Director General of the DGHS, said the government is providing treatment for coronavirus patients at free of cost.

DGHS sources said the health and family welfare ministry has also prepared 488 institutions in all district and upazila levels across the country to instantly quarantine 26,352 suspected coronavirus patients.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque at a health bulletin on Wednesday said 2,000 beds are being prepared at International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB) for Covid-19 patients, 1,300 more beds in a market of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and 1,200 beds in four multistorey buildings in Diabari of Uttara in the capital.

“A total of 4,500 more beds are being prepared for coroanvirus patients in the capital. The beds for coronavirus patients will be prepared soon,” he said.

The minister further said the health and family welfare ministry also will include some other hospitals, including Mugda Medical College Hospital, Burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Mohanagar General Hospital, Railway General Hospital and Mirpur Lalkuthi Maternity Hospital, for Covid-19 patients.

DGHS sources said it also will include a portion of the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) and a building of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for coronavirus patients.

Zahid Maleque further said the government has also prepared 200-bed hospitals with ICU facility in divisional level and 50-100-bed hospitals in all districts level across the country for the covid-19 patients.

Health Engineering Department sources said the construction work of the country’s largest isolation centre for corona patients at the International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB) in the capital is progressing fast.

The Convention City Authority and the Health Engineering Department (HED) are carrying out the construction work quickly to set up the 2,000-bed isolation centre, the sources added.

Bashundhara Group has dedicated its ICCB to the noble cause of treating corona patients and saving many lives. As the country’s largest business conglomerate, Bashundhara Group has stood by the government and people during the corona pandemic.

Initially, the ICCB is going to become a 2,000-bed isolation centre which may be further expanded to a 5,000-bed facility if needed. The convention centre will be the largest integrated treatment facility in the country for Covid-19 patients once the construction work is over.

A total of 2,000 isolation unit will be set up at the Expo Trade Center and three more convention halls. In the convention hall of 46,000 square feet, 71 intensive care unit (ICU) will be set up with the approval from the Ministry of Health.

Meanwhile, since several doctors and nurses have already contracted Covid-19, the government has taken initiative to ensure their quarantine outside their respective homes, DGHS sources said.

To ensure their isolation after work, the government has arranged hotel facilities as special accommodation for doctors, nurses and other health workers and medical staff, who are on the frontline in the battle against Covid-19.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has already prepared a requisition to book rooms in hotels for 530 doctors, nurses and other health workers.

Physicians serving Covid-19 patients in different hospitals, including Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital, Kurmitola General Hospital, Sheikh Russel Gastroliver Institute and Hospital and Institute of Child and Mother Health (ICMH).
