Corona tests being conducted at seven centres in country

Health and Family Planning Minister Zahid Maleque Swapan on Sunday stated that at present Covid-19 tests are being conducted at seven centres across the country.

Joining at the regular online press briefing of the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), the minister disclosed the information. The number of test centres will be increased gradually, he also added.

The Health Minister said that IEDCR, IPH, National Institute of Laboratory Medicine, icddr,b, Children's Hospital, Children's Health Research Foundation and Idesh, a science-based non-profit health care organisation are already ready to conduct PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) tests.

He also said that step has been taken to extend PCR test facilities to all divisions outside Dhaka.

Coronavirus test has begun at the Bangladesh Institute of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease Hospital in Chattogram. Installation of PCR machine at Rangpur and Rajshahi Medical College Hospital is almost done. Installation work has also started at Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital. Coronavirus tests will be launched in other divisions within the next 7 to 10 days.

He also informed that at present 500 medical ventilators are available, besides, more 450 ventilators will arrive within a short time. We have already distributed those ventilators to different hospitals.

The minister claimed that even many large countries do not have such a number of ventilators. “We have taken measures earlier so Bangladesh is in a good situation,” he added.
