Terming coronavirus a ‘national enemy’, the High Court (HC) on Wednesday said the only way to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 is to put the country under lockdown.
The court said everyone will have to jointly fight against the virus just like they did in the Liberation War and urged the people to keep faith in the Prime Minister and the government and follow their instructions.Justice Md Ashraful Kamal and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir's bench came up with the observation after disposing a writ petition seeking establishment of coronavirus testing laboratories across the country.
Advocate Humayun Kabir Pallab filed the writ petition on March 18.
Bangladesh should follow the model of Taiwan that managed to fight coronavirus despite being located beside China, HC said.
As COVID-19 is a global crisis and a vaccine is yet to be discovered, only measure would be to lockdown the country, the court said.
Meanwhile, another elderly man has died from COVID-19, taking the total death toll to five in the country until Wednesday. So far, the country has tested 794 people and confirmed 27 cases.
Coronavirus, first reported in China, has so far infected 435,382 people globally and killed 19,620 -- a mortality rate of 15 percent, according to Worldometer.
