Dhaka University to remain shut from March 18 to 28 over coronavirus situation

Dhaka University authorities on Monday decided to postpone its academic activities for eleven days – from March 18 to March 28 -- amid growing coronavirus fears in the country.

The decision was made at an emergency meeting, with DU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman in chair this morning.

Faculty deans, directors of all institutes, heads of all the departments and hall provosts of the university were present at the meeting that started at 10:00 am.

"All academic activities will remain suspended from March 18 to 28 for ensuring the safety of our students,” Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman said, as the country announced detection of the new coronavirus or COVID-19 cases.

Dhaka University’s residential halls are particularly overcrowded.

Earlier, Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) submitted a memorandum to the DU authorities for suspending classes and examinations of the university amid a global coronavirus outbreak.

Meanwhile, the government has shut down all educational institutions for the rest of March to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
