One drown 20 missing after bridal boats capsize in river Padma

A minor girl was drowned and at least 20 people went missing after two boats of a bridal party capsized in the river Padma on Friday night.

The deceased was identified as Mariyam Khatun, 6, daughter of Ratan Ali and Brishti Khatun of Basua area in Rajshahi city.

The death toll could be raised as seven to eight were children among the missing.

The tragic incident happened in the deep of the river in Srirampur area of Rajshahi city.

However, seven people were rescued alive and taken to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital after two boats drowned in the river.

A bridal party including bridegroom Rumon Ali and bride Sweety Khatun sailed on Friday evening from Charkhidirpur village of Poba upazila in Rajshahi district for bride’s house in Dangerhat village of Poba upazila, other side of the Padma river after marriage ceremony was held on Thursday.

Meanwhile, divers of fire service and civil defence started rescue operation in the river. Besides, BGB members also were patrolling on the river in search of floating passengers.

Abdur Rauf, senior station officer at the Rajshahi Sadar Station of the fire service and civil defence, said about 35 passengers were on two boats. Among them, 17 were women and six were children.

The boats sank in the river after a collision between two boats. However, it was not clear how many passengers went missing, Abdur Rauf added,
