Golam Dastagir Gazi not infected with coronavirus: IEDCR

Textile and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi, currently undergoing treatment at a city hospital, has not been infected with novel coronavirus, according to an official of Institute of Epidemiology, Diseases Control and Research.

However, the minister has been infected with human coronavirus 229E (HCoV-229E) one of the seven coronaviruses which include HCoV-NL63, HCoV-OC43 and HCoV-HKU1, IEDCR officials said.

Director of IEDCR Prof Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora confirmed this at a press briefing on the latest coronavirus situation at her office in the capital Mohakhali area.

On receiving information, Golam Dastagir Gazi is currently undergoing at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in the capital.

HCoV-229E is one of the first coronavirus and is linked to common cold symptoms, ranging from the common cold to high-morbidity outcomes such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis, in healthy adults. Mostly younger children and the elderly are considered to be vulnerable to developing lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) due to the infection.
