Dr Wazed’s 79th birthday on Sunday

The 79th birthday of renowned nuclear scientist and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s husband Dr MA Wazed Miah will be celebrated through day-long programmes in a befitting manner in Rangpur city on Sunday.

Dr Wazed, a selfless patriot and perfectly honest person having a colourful working life experience, was born on February 16, 1942 in a respectable Muslim family of Laldighee Fatehpur village in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur.

He died on May 9, 2009 at the age of 67.

A large number of organisations have chalked out day-long programmes to celebrate the 79th birthday of Dr Wazed in a befitting manner at his birthplace village of Laldighee Fatehpur and Rangpur city in the district.

The programmes include placing of floral wreaths at the grave of Dr Wazed in Laldighee Fatehpur village, offering Fateha, milad mahfils and special munajats, distribution of food among the poor and distressed people and commemorative discussions.

Nephew of Dr Wazed, General Secretary of Pirganj upazila Awami League (AL) and Pirganj municipal Mayor Tazimul Islam Shamim said the birthday celebration will begin with placing of wreaths at the grave of Dr Wazed Miah in the morning.

General Secretary of Dr Wazed Smriti Sangshad (DWSS) Saiful Islam Jahangir told BSS that the organisation has completed preparations to celebrate the 79th birthday of Dr Wazed through two-day programmes on February 15 and 16 next.

The programmes include drawing and handwriting competitions, poem recitation competitions and patriotic song competitions for school and college going students to be held on the Town Hall premises at 3 pm on February 15 (Saturday).

A large number of children and students of different educational institutions and socio-cultural organisations have registered them to participate in the competitions.

On February 16 (Sunday) in the morning, leaders of the DWSS will place wreaths at the grave of Dr Wazed Miah, arrange Ziarat and offer special munajats in his birthplace village of Laldighee Fatehpur in Pirganj upazila of the district.

Milad and doa mahfils will be arranged and special munajats be offered at Keramotia Jam-e-Mosque in Rangpur city after Asr prayers seeking eternal peace for the departed soul of Dr Wazed and his other family members.

A memorial discussion on the life and works of nuclear scientist Dr Wazed will be arranged at Town Hall auditorium at 6 pm on February 16 and prizes will be distributed among winners of different competitions.

Childhood friends, classmates and family members of Dr Wazed, academics and intellectuals will take part in the discussion on his life, work, personality, excellent character, unparalleled talent, human qualities and narrate dozens of memories.

Talking to media today (Friday), General Secretary of DWSS Saiful Islam Jahangir said President of the organisation Professor Hamidul Haque Khondker will preside over the discussion.

“Divisional Commissioner KM Tariqul Islam and Deputy Commissioner Md Asib Ahsan will attend the memorial discussion as the chief and special guests respectively,” Jahangir said, and requested all to be present in the two-day programmes.

Similarly, Dr Wazed Foundation, Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur district and Pirganj upazila units of AL and its associate bodies and family of Dr Wazed will celebrate his 79th birthday in an appropriate manner.
