Cyber Security and Crime Department of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Thursday detained five persons for spreading rumours about Novel Coronavirus through different Facebook group and online news portals.

Several facebook groups and news portals were running fake and false information saying ‘Novel coronavirus has broken out in Bangladesh and two Bangladeshis have died from it.’

Noticing such rumour, police detained five men from different areas in the capital on Thursday night and took them to Cyber Security and Crime Department for quizzing.

Nazmul Islam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of the cybersecurity department confirmed the detention.

Nazmul Islam told the Daily Sun that concerned persons to Doinik Khobor, Twitebangla.com, Anno Alo, Sheikh Rana (Facebook ID), MA Hasnat Jamil (Facebook ID) have been brought for questioning.

“There is no authentic coronavirus case or death had been reported in Bangladesh yet. The government and the people of this country are working responsibly to prevent the spread of the virus,” he said.

Some people have been spreading propagandas about this matter with great enthusiasm. Those who are involved in such propagandas will face legal action under Digital Security Act.
