Adequate security to be ensured for city polls: Kamal

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal today said all-out preparation has been made to ensure peaceful city corporations elections to be held on February 1.

“The law enforcement agencies have been asked to ensure adequate security for holding Dhaka south and north city corporations’ polls peaceful,” he told journalists after a meeting about law and order for the upcoming city polls at his ministry office here.

The home minister said Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Ansar, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) will be engaged along with police to maintain overall law and order during the polls.

There will be restriction on carrying and showing licensed arms from January 30 to February 3, he said.

“There will be two sub-control rooms at each of the two city corporations to monitor law and order situation. Besides, the home ministry will extend cooperation to the Election Commission (EC) as per their demands for conducting the polls peacefully.” Said Kamal said.

“Tight security will be ensured for each polling centre during the voting time,” he added.

Apart from regular security measures, law enforcement agencies will be on patrol in all 2,4,86 voting centres during the election time, he said, adding that intelligence agencies will also be in the field to check any untoward incident on polling day.

Replying to a question, Kamal said no person is arrested without arrest warrant during the poll campaign, adding, “Police will not arrest any person without arrest warrant.

Among others, security division secretary Mustafa Kamal Uddin, Inspector General of Police Dr Mohammad Javed Patwari, Director General of BGB Major General Md Shafeenul Islam, Director General of RAB Dr Benazir Ahmed, Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Md Shafiqul Islam and other officers concerned joined the meeting.
