Rohingya drug peddler killed in Teknaf ‘gunfight’

A suspected Rohingya drug peddler was killed in a 'gunfight' with the members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Jadimura in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s bazar on Sunday morning.

The diseased was identified as Md Ayas, 25, son of Md Jamal Hossain of block-D-8 of Ukhia's Kutupalong camp-2.

BGB members recovered 2.2 lakh pieces of contraband yaba pills and a local firearm from the spot during the ‘shootout’.

BGB-2 Battalion Captain Lt Cornel Mohammad Faisal Hasan Khan confirmed this to media this morning. Three members of BGB sustained injuries during the gunfight, he said.

Lt Col Foysal said they were tipped off about a big yaba smuggling bid by boat. BGB had information that the yaba consignment was coming from Myanmar’s Laldip area. A BGB team took position and stopped the boat around 5:00 am.

“Drug peddlers fired at BGB from the boat and triggered a gunfight,” he said.

Ayas sustained gunshot wounds during the gunfight. BGB members initially took him to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex. He was later shifted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead, Lt Col Foysal added.
