Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal has been declared Finance Minister of the year 2020 by British magazine 'The Banker' for his contribution on stimulating growth and stabilising economy.
It is for the first time for any Bangladeshi finance minister receiving this prestigious award of the British renowned publication under Financial Times Group.The London-based monthly magazine made the announcement for ‘Finance Minister of the Year for Asia-Pacific and Global award 2020’ on Thursday, says a finance ministry release.
Since 2004, The Banker has been giving this award in consideration of finance ministers’ role in bringing momentum in financial sector and the steps taken towards long-term development of their country.
It usually selects five finance ministers for Asia-Pacific, America, Africa, Middle-East and Europe regions and finally selects one to be awarded as the best global finance minister for any particular year.
Indonesian finance minister received the award last year, while Indian former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley bagged it in 2018 and Argentine finance minister won it in 2017.
AHM Mustafa Kamal has gave credit to the people of Bangladesh and particularly to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who’s direction, he said, has led him to this success, finance ministry has said.
Kamal took office in January 2019 after Awami League led Grand Alliance government swept to power after December 30 Election in 2018 to continue for the third consecutive term.Earlier, he also served as Planning Minister of the government during 2014-2018.
Some initiatives of the finance minister after taking office one year ago in keeping intact the momentum in economy and bringing back discipline in fianancial sector to make way for higher growth have been lauded by the magazine.
