Agriculture minister Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque on Thursday said the government will purchase 6 lakh metric tonnes of paddy directly from farmers in the ongoing Aman season to ensure fair price for them.
“The government will give priority to the poor farmers while buying paddy directly from them,” he said.He made the remark while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the seventh Bapa Foodpro International Expo 2019 as chief guest at the International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB) in the capital.
He said, “We will prefer impoverished farmers for purchasing paddy. We are preparing a farmers' list up to the union level for a lottery. Therefore, there will be no political pressure and none will be deprived of the opportunities.”
Regarding the hike in the paddy prices, the minister said, “The prices have increased to Tk 100 to 200 following the government’s announcement of buying paddy directly from farmers. It is a blessing for them.”
