Armed Forces Day on Thursday

The Armed Forces Day will be celebrated on Thursday with due solemnity and enthusiasm marking the founding of Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Air Force during the country’s Liberation War.

On this day in 1971, Bangladesh Armed Forces comprising army, navy and air force came into being and launched an all-out attack on the Pakistani occupation forces.

Since the country’s independence, the day has been observed as the Armed Forces Day every year.

The day’s programmes will begin with the offering of special prayers in mosques of all cantonments, naval and air force bases across the country after Fazr prayers, seeking divine blessings for the country's welfare and progress and continued development and progress of the Armed Forces.

President Abdul Hamid, also the supreme commander of the Armed Forces, and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages greeting the members of the armed forces on the occasion.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will lay wreaths at ‘Shikha Anirban’ (the Eternal Flame) at Dhaka Cantonment on Thursday morning to pay homage to the members of the Armed Forces who laid down their lives during the country's Liberation War in 1971.

Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral AMMM Aurangzeb Chowdhury and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Masihuzzaman Serniabat will also lay wreaths at ‘Shikha Anirban’ on behalf of their respective forces.

The chiefs of the three services will pay courtesy calls on the President at Bangabhaban and the Prime Minister at the Armed Forces Division in Dhaka Cantonment.

On the occasion, the Prime Minister, who also holds the Defence portfolio, will host a reception and meet the family members of the Bir Shresthas and other gallantry award-winning freedom fighters at the Army Multipurpose Complex in Dhaka Cantonment.

In the afternoon, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will host a reception at Sena Kunja in Dhaka Cantonment to commemorate the day.

Among others, the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, the Chief Justice, former Presidents, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Former Chief Advisors, ministers and dignitaries of the equivalent status, State Ministers and dignitaries of the equivalent status, Deputy Speaker, Foreign Envoys, Head of International Organisation, Chief Election Commissioner, Election Commissioners, judges of the Supreme Court, Cabinet Secretary, Principal Secretary, Members of Parliament (Dhaka area), former military officers, former chiefs of three forces, the recipients of Ekushey Padak-2019 and Swadhinata Padak-2019, journalists, educationists, political and prominent people, inheritors of the Bir Shresthas, decorated officers living in Dhaka during the liberation war and after the liberation war and their inheritors, high civilian officials, retired and in-service officials of three forces and other distinguished personalities are expected to attend the reception.

The chiefs of the Army, Navy and Air Force will also accord receptions to the award-winning freedom fighters of their respective forces and their inheritors.

Savar, Barishal, Cox's Bazar, Bogura, Sylhet, Ghatail, Chattogram, Comilla, Jashore, Rangpur, Rajendrapur and Khulna cantonments will also host receptions marking the day.

Various programmes have also been chalked out at different army garrisons, naval ships, installations and bases of the air force across the country outside Dhaka.

Bangladesh Navy ships will remain open for visitors in Dhaka, Khulna, Chandpur, Barishal and Chattogram from 2:00 pm to till dusk on the occasion of Armed Forces Day-2019 on November 21.

Bangladesh Television (BTV) will broadcast a special programme titled ‘Anirban’ after the 8:00 pm bulletin on Wednesday (November 20), highlighting the significance of the day.

Besides, Bangladesh Betar will broadcast a special ‘Durbar’ programme at 7:30 pm on Thursday (November 21).

Later, the special Anirban programme will be aired on various private TV channels.

The national dailies will publish special supplements on the occasion. Besides, essay and drawing competitions will be arranged in educational institutions under the Armed Forces.
