Baby born with 'no face'!

A baby born without eyes, a nose and missing parts of his skull has been discharged from hospital after 40 days despite doctors predicting he would only survive a matter of hours.

Rodrigo, dubbed ‘the baby without a face’ by Portuguese media, was also born deaf and has some brain lesions and imperfections in the mouth.

The infant’s condition was a complete surprise to parents, Marlene Simao and David Ribeiro, who claim their obstetrician did not identify any deformities during four ultrasound scans.

Little Rodrigo was born at San Bernardo Hospital on October 7 in Setubal which lies within the Lisbon metropolitan area.

While the infant continues to suffer some breathing issues, his health is improving all the time.

Rodrigo’s godmother Tania Contente told local media that the parents are hopeful their son will become stronger.

She added: "Rodrigo was no longer dependent on a team of experts at the hospital to continue living so he was allowed to go home.

"The offer was there for the baby to stay in hospital, but they wanted to take care of him at home."

The first time the parents heard of Rodrigo’s condition was later into the pregnancy when they underwent a 5-D scan in another clinic.

5-D pregnancy scans enable the parents to see a realistic view of the baby while still in the utero, showing the youngster’s features compared to ultrasounds that show the outline of the foetus.

The medic delivering the 5-D scan noticed the baby’s defect, but when Marlene confronted obstetrician Artur Carvalho she claims he told her that such scans were not accurate and the baby was healthy, El Mundo reported.

Carvalho has been suspended after apparently missing the child’s condition when it should have been visible from 12 weeks.

Marlene and David want to see him barred. The investigation is ongoing.
