Government for multinational commission to evaluate Rakhine situation

Bangladesh is considering forming a commission with people from various countries to visit Rakhine State in Myanmar and inspect whether peace is prevailing there, said foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen.

The minister told this to a group of reporters at his ministry on Thursday.

“Myanmar authorities should ensure that peace and stability are prevailing there,” said the foreign minister.

“It is unfortunate,” he said when his comments were sought about the refusal of Rohingyas to return to their place of origin in Myanmar.

Momen said representatives of Myanmar, China and Bangladesh governments were present there on Thursday.

He reiterated the Bangladesh government’s proposal to take 100 “majhis” or Rohingya leaders to Rakhine State to show them what measures and arrangements are taken for peaceful return of Rohingyas to their homes in Rakhine.

He said Bangladesh is waiting with high hope. The problem is created by Myanmar and the solution lies there, he added.

About the campaign against the repatriation of Rohingyas, Momen said steps will be taken to identify those distributing leaflets and carrying out campaigns motivating Rohingyas not to return to their homeland.

Momen said efforts will continue for the voluntary and safe return of Rohingyas to their place of origin.
