10 held after AL activist’s death in Magura clash

A 40-year-old activist of Awami League was killed and 15 others injured in a clash between two rival groups, over establishing supremacy, in Magura sadar upazila Wednesday (August 14) afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Meer Kabir Ali, brother of Shotrujitpur union ward-5 Awami League President Khorshed Meer.

Police, however, detained 10 persons over the incident.

Police and local sources said Shotrujitpur union ward-5 Awami League President Khorshed Meer and BNP's former organising secretary for the same ward Billal Hossain had a longstanding rivalry over establishing supremacy in the area.

Followers of both sides engaged in a scuffle at a tea-stall in a Singhdanga area, in the morning. Following this incident the clash broke out between two groups around 3:30 pm as the supporters of Billal attacked Khorshed's brother Kabir with locally made weapons. At least 15 people of both sides including Meer Kabir got injured during the clash.

Kabir was declared dead by the doctors after some 14-15 injured were taken to Magura 15-bed Hospital.

On information, police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control after nabbing 10 persons on the spot.

A contingent of police has been deployed in the area to avert further violent activities, said Magura Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sirajul Islam.
