District Social Welfare Office has launched a 50-day sewing training program for transgender people of the district aimed at brining them to normal life.

A total of 50 transgender people in two batches are taking the training under a government project for development of the special section of the society, deputy director of the social welfare office Selim Shah said.

During the training period every trainee is getting daily allowance of Taka 300 and Taka 140 for food.

Social welfare officials said occupational training programs are helping capacity building of the transgender people, creating scope for being involved with income generating activities.

Rehabilitation of transgender people came to light following government’s recognition to them as a third gender. Joypurhat has about 132 transgender people.

Shamima Akter Joya, a trainee of the course, said she is now living normal life and carrying the living costs of her parents.
