Murder accused killed in Jamalpur ‘gunfight’

A murder accused was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Dumurtala area near Indian Border of Bakshiganj upazila under Jamalpur on Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as Shipon, 32, son of Jalal Uddin, of Munshichar area in Sherpur Sadar Upazila.

Police claimed that four members of the law enforcers were also injured in the gunfight.

AKM Mahbubul Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bakshiganj Police Station, said people caught Shipon while conducting robbery in some boats at Bakshiganj on Sunday night and handed over to police.

According to his information, police launched drives in Sarmara and Ramrampur areas to seize drugs and firearms.

When police reached Dumurtola under Kamalpur union, his associates opened fire on the law enforcers, forcing them to fire back in self defence, triggering a gunfight.

Later, police recovered bullet-hit Shipon and took him to upazila health complex where doctor declared him dead, he added.

Shipon was accused in 18 cases, including murder with Sherpur, Shrebardi and Bakshiganj Police Station, the OC added.

Later, police recovered a motorcycle, a pipe gun and 300 pieces of Yaba tablets from the spot.

Delwar Hossain, district police Super (ASP) revealed the information in a press conference.
