Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has congratulated the doctors and the patient on the first successful liver transplantation at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).

Professor Kanak Kanti Barua, Vice-Chancellor of BSMMU, said this at a press briefing on Thursday. He was addressing reporters on the occasion of discharge of patient Siratul Islam Shuvo and his donor mother Rokshana Begum.

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina followed the case and congratulated the doctors in a message when she heard it was successful,” he said.

Both the patient and the donor have recovered well, said Prof Md Zulfiqur Rahman Khan, chairman of the Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic and Liver Transplantation Surgery, who led the team of transplantation.

The patients will have to go through follow-up check and treatment.

On June 24, the transplant was conducted with the help of Indian specialists. The BSMMU arranged the surgery for free setting off full-fledged liver transplantation in Bangladesh.

Health Minister Zahid Maleque has termed the liver transplantation a “milestone” in Bangladesh's health sector.

An Indian team led by liver transplant surgeon Dr P Balachandra Menon helped them in this exhaustive 18-hour surgery.

The BIRDEM Hospital was the first to initiate liver transplantation. It started the scheme in 2010, but could not continue it.
