We are favourites against Lankans, says Mosaddek

Bangladesh all-rounder Mossadek Hossain said on Thursday that he believes that Tigers will be favourite against Sri Lanka in the upcoming three-match ODI series, scheduled to commence from July 28.

Bangladesh are yet to win any series against Sri Lanka at their own den but tourists seemed to be confident considering their recent rise in the 50-over format while the instability existing in and around their opponent’s squad.

Bangladesh have played seven bilateral series against Sri Lanka and only managed to draw against the Islanders on two occasions while losing the remaining five against their Asian neighbors.

“I think we are favourites against Sri Lanka,” Mossadek told reporters at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium where they are taking preparation for their upcoming international assignment.

“You see we are in a better position than them in both batting and bowling department and if you talk about experience then we have the upper hand in that area too,” he said.

Mossadek added that the absence of Shakib Al Hasan and the injury which prevented Mahmudullah Riyad from bowling is expected to give a platform to cement his place as an all-rounder as he will have more chances to bowl against the Sri Lankans.

Shakib is granted leave during the series as he is expected to perform Hajj, Mahmudullah did not bowl during the entire length of ICC World Cup 2019 for his shoulder injury and is not expected to bowl during the Lankan tour as well.

“I did not think like that (Mahmudullah’s absence in bowling) will help me ahead because since I was made my debut in ODI, I had to bowl almost in every match,” said Mossadek.

“Even when Riyad (Mahmudullah) bhai was regular in bowling, I had to bowl five-six overs in every match,” he said,

“If I think that way, I’m getting more chance as a bowler and I will improve as an all-rounder,” Mossadek said.

“Look, Shakib bhai won’t be with us in the Sri Lanka series. That’s why more opportunities may come in the bowling department. I may have to come into bowling early in the innings. I also may have to bowl more overs than usual. Of course I am prepared for that opportunity if I have to bowl more overs. I have a plan regarding that. I am focusing on capitalising on every bit of opportunity that I will get. I am not thinking other than that,” he said.

Mossadek added that he is not thinking too much regarding his position in the batting order as he is trying to establish himself at the number seven position.

“I think I will have to bat in the Sri Lanka series at the same position where I batted throughout the World Cup and series before that because of team combination. I think I am set in that position, I am not thinking anything about that actually,” said Mossadek.

“Actually, before the World Cup and also during the DPL (Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League) I was totally focusing on improving my strike rate. So, when I go on to bat I may face the same type of situation. If the situation is tricky then I have to propel my team forward. So, I am working on that,” he said.

“I am working on what to do in both comfortable and tricky situations,” he said.

“Actually, if you think about the overall strike rate then it’s a bit difficult. Because those who bat at number seven are always under pressure. You have to hit every ball in this position. Sometimes the situation is such that there are 15 overs left. At that situation you have to support the team and then accelerate at the end. There are many different roles. All the time there may not be the same situation. There can be so many different situations. I am thinking that way, I will try to utilise any opportunity,” he concluded.

The Bangladesh team members have divided into two groups and will fly on July 20 and 22 respectively for the three-match series that will be played on July 26, 28 and 31 in Colombo.

All the matches will be played at R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo.
