Railway ministry asked not to lunch DEMU trains anymore

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday directed the authorities concerned not to buy Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) trains, BSS reported.

She also suggested the railway ministry to introduce other rail communication from Dhaka to Bangabandhu Hi-Tech Park at Kaliakoir in Gazipur instead of DEMU trains.

The directives came from the second ECNEC meeting of the current fiscal year (FY20) with ECNEC Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair held at the NEC Conference Room in city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area.

“DEMU trains are not suitable for our country. So, the prime minster has asked the ministry of Railways not to buy them anymore,” said Planning Secretary Muhammad Nurul Amin while briefing reporters after the meeting.

He also informed that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has also suggested for introducing a separate direct train from Dhaka to the Hi-Tech Park at Kaliakoir.

During the meeting, The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved eight projects involving Taka 5,142.06 crore including the one to widen and strengthen important upazila and union roads in Dhaka Division worth Taka 2,606 crore.
